Share where you live... self-portrait

This poster in a vacant storefront caught my eye. If you look closely, can you find me?

Share where you live... water in motion

Water in motion, sprinkler, fountain, etc... get some motion blur

One day last week, I came to the old part of my town, parked, and walked. There are only a few days left to finish Sarah's summer photography scavenger hunt, and I'm still on the trail of the elusive pay phone. But I knew I'd find other items on my list.

The water fountain park was my first stop. It's across from the public library, so I come past here pretty often. A decade ago, when I got my first digital camera, I ended up here on a 100 degree day, to find the park crowded with kids (and moms). They were having so much fun, I decided to stay and watch. That camera was a Canon ultrazoom, and I loved the range.

Share where you live... coffee

Visit your favorite coffee shop, shoot the cup
It felt like a coffee and journal kind of morning, so I headed to town for some alone time, a walk around town to take some pictures, then run errands.

Share where you live... wooden stairs

Across the street from one of my favorite breakfast spots are two sculptures made from silverware:  a penguin and her chick, and a dragon. They always make me smile, so I crossed the street to get a closer look. And there were the wooden stairs I was looking for.

Share where you live... sidewalk art

As far as sidewalk art goes, this is pretty spectacular. And it's permanent: a mural added to the local skate park a year or so ago. I wish I'd had a chance to go to Redmond over the weekend; it was their annual Chalk Fest, with lots of invited artists scratching their art onto sidewalks.

Share Where You Live... farm stand

Visit a Farmers Market/Farm Stand - favorite fruit or vegetable | #16

Carpenito Bros. is by far my favorite farm stand.  I've been going there since I moved to this town in 2015, but it's been there much longer than that.

More than 50 years ago, brothers Mike and Dan Carpinito started growing vegetables on their family farm. Starting with pumpkins and corn, they sold to locals passing by on what is today Central Avenue in Kent. As interest grew, they gradually expanded into other vegetables, then built a roadside farm stand.

As their business grew, so did their dreams. they acquired more land in the famous Kent Valley, some of the most fertile farmland in the state (even the nation). Today, Mike and Dan, together with their sons, grow more than 40 varieties of farm-fresh vegetables on more than 800 acres. They also grow and sell plants of all kinds starting in the spring, topsoil and beauty bark (manufactured on site), and Christmas trees, before closing down for the winter. The towering piles of copper-red bark are a good landmark for finding the farm stand.

One of my favorite sights in the summertime is a John Deere tractor and trailer, hauling produce from the farms at the south end of town, to the farm stand at the north end.

Today I came for end-of-season perennials, and vegetables for the fridge. Like a 9-in. cabbage for a buck, and a huge head of Romaine for 75 cents. From June through September, this is the only place I buy vegetables, berries, and fruit.

My photos show one of my favorite flowers in many varieties: the hydrangea. And one of my favorite vegetables, cabbage.

Share where you live... rusty

Have you ever seen a David Bradley tractor? I think of them as antique rototillers, not as fancy as a Garden Way tiller, but way cooler. These walk-behind tractors are becoming rare around here, so it's always fun to stumble across one. And it's perfect for Share Where You Live #2:  visit a flea market/tag sale/antique store, and find something rusty.

Somewhere, I have a photograph of my father-in-law, using his David Bradley tractor to till up the huge vegetable garden behind their house. In his late-30's with dark hair, bright blue eyes, and muscles, he flashed a bright smile at whoever was taking the picture.

Sadly his tractor fell into disuse, then disrepair, once the kids were older and DW's mom went to work, and the big vegetable gardens became a thing of the past.

I imagine his would look much like this one, rusty, missing a few pieces, but mostly intact... and with that all-important attachment: the tiller.

Share where you live... wet car

It's been a year since the MX-5 last got a wax job... but it still beads up perfectly. That shows how much time my little car has spent in the garage since last summer!

Share where you live... swingset

This small park isn't visited by many. At the end of a dead-end road, you can't see it easily, and the nearby school has been closed. So the neighbors know about it, and those in search of a geocache will eventually visit here.

The park is peaceful, full of mown green grass lawns, and has big islands of towering trees, perfect for kids to play in. Because of the staggered islands of trees, there's lots of privacy for those wanting to set up a picnic lunch, or a croquet set, or a badminton net. There is also a brand new playground, including this bright blue swing... the real topic of this post for Sarah's Share Where You Live photo scavenger hunt.

Share where you live... adventure with a friend

In June we met Ranae and Lil in Tillamook for a spur-of-the-moment weekend at the beach. We explored, ate lots of crab and mussels and clams, had a great time introducing them to geocaching. One day we headed into the Coast range, climbing up and up until we reached the top of a razorback ridge, then drove down and back up the next ridge. It was a spectacular and wonderful way to spend the day.

Share where you live... Barn

I love to drive the back roads in search of barns and farmhouses, two of my favorite structures. This isn't the kind of barn I ever want to find.

We took a closer look at this one when we stopped for a geocache in the fence nearby, and it looks like a main beam in the roof failed, and it brought most of the roof down with it. Unless it's replaced, the rest of the barn will follow.

Share where you live... reflections

At the marina in Port Townsend, in between rain showers, the reflections were amazing.

Around the point near Fort Worden, the rain turned a depression in a boulder into a reflecting pool. But it was more fun to photograph leaves in the water, than lay on my stomach on the wet sand and try to catch a reflection of sky and clouds.

On a logging road full of river crossings, this one caught my eye. I sat on the bridge and shot the stream. The light was dappled and beautiful, and I didn't want to leave.

Share where you live... A bench with a view

It took an hour to drive to this spot, high on a bald hilltop in the mountains east of  Rockaway Beach. Farm land, then a river valley, higher and higher through active logging areas, climbing saddles and ridges until one last dizzying climb up a hogsback with a spooky drop off both sides, and we were there. From here, a 360-degree view of the mountains, and to the west, the Pacific Ocean shows as a dark blue band.

Explore a park, find a bench | #3

On the rocky edge facing the west, someone had cut two logs and fashioned a rough bench, and built a firepit of stone. Although I can't imagine driving up this road after dark, I can't imagine a better place to come watch a sunset.

Share where you live... Green

It's not hard in this part of the world, to find green everywhere you look. Even in June, when it's starting to heat up, the woods are still brilliant green.

For this entry in the Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt, the task was to find five different leaves. In this wooded park between Hwy. 101 and the Pacific Ocean, I didn't even need to move my feet.

Share where you live... sign collector

After an hour or two walking the old streets of Port Townsend, I spotted these paintings on the side of a brick building, and stopped for a photograph. Then I spotted the arrow. Since I always take pictures of these old murals and signs, I didn't need the hint. Then I realized that the arrow pointed the way to where I'd parked.

Share where you live... Shadows

On our way home from the ocean, we were still chasing a few more geocaches before we lost the light. And when we got close to the abandoned cooling towers at Satsop, DW hopped off the highway and drove across the river to take a look. All those years driving past, and it's the first time I've been up close and personal.

Ladder - show where it leads | #25

I stood in the weedy parking lot, so close I had to crane my neck to see the top of the 480-ft. tower. And all I could do was wonder how many steps were in this staircase... and be glad I would never have to find out first-hand. I love how the late-afternoon light created beautiful shadows from this vertigo-inducing ladder.

Share where you live... yellow in a garden

A weekend on the north coast of the Olympic Peninsula... to pick up wine and enjoy live music, do some geocaching, and shop for new lavender plants for the garden. The lavender farms are just starting to bloom, but Sequim is full of gardens in full bloom.

Share where you live... flags

My blogging friend, Sarah of Twisted Road Studio, is doing something fun this summer: a photo scavenger hunt to to give us some inspiration to get out with our cameras, but without the stress of a doing a daily post. And I decided to play along. There are 28 prompts, and we have until the end of August to finish the list.

Find a flag | #7

This approach is perfect for me. I've tried following daily prompts in the past, and it just doesn't work for me. I always get sidetracked by quilting or gardening or geocaching, and hate when I miss a deadline, however minor. So I'm going to have fun with the list.

I'll post my photos here or on my Instagram page, Pennylane_53 (or maybe both places).

Do a search for the hashtag #sharewhereyoulive2019 to see what others are posting.
